History, far from being dead, is a living creature that is as ever changing as the sea and as transient as the incoming tide. It is written for the moment, not so much by what is said, but rather by what is left out. For this account of the Namibian Desert’s diamond story I have blended the personal memories of the very last diamond era old-timers with what has already been written on the subject. Both sources were often in conflict, not only with one another, but also within themselves.
